Maria Chiara Argirò has been a central figure in the UK jazz, classical and electronic worlds since she moved to London from Rome over a decade ago. A skilled pianist since childhood, she’s collaborated with everyone from These New Puritans to Jono McCleery to Jamie Leeming alongside output with Moonfish. Her previous solo album, the stunning electronic jazz-fusion record Forest City, received widespread critical acclaim and was covered by the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. Her music has featured in the Netflix series, Elite, and she can count the likes of Four Tet and Gilles Peterson as fans, with the latter describing her music as “absolutely crazy good”.

Closer, her new album, is a testament to Maria’s journey of self-exploration and a manifestation of her profound connection with music. Rooted in an indescribable feeling that compelled her to create, the album transcends boundaries and traverses the spectrum of electronic music with unparalleled depth and clarity.

MaxMantis

Matt and Phreds

Lukas Gernet piano / Rafael Jerjen double bass / Samuel Büttiker drums

MaxMantis is more than just a piano trio! For ten years, the band – hailing from Switzerland – has toured the world with melodies inspired by the fascinating microcosm of the insect world. These underestimated arthropods not only inspired the band’s name but also invigorate its compositions and gave the band a face, a story, and its own universe. Sounds crazy? It is!

The three players form a clan of sonic storytellers, transcending stylistic and musical boundaries. The speed with which a praying mantis catches its prey, the strength of the Australian bull ant that carries one hundred times its own weight, and the beautiful complexity of the golden-orb-weaver spider’s web: these exaggerated superpowers link the tiniest creepy-crawlies to the MaxMantis clan. With an innate dose of Swiss precision, they perform the ‘Dance of the Moth Hunters’, dive into the world of the ‘Lady Bug Thugs’, cautiously adore the ‘Preying Mantis’ and explain in ‘Queen Bee’ what the hype around “the flowers and the bees” is really all about!

With their new album ‘YELLOW’, these three humanised super-insects continue to weave their musical epic. These three eminent Swiss jazz musicians (who also look fantastic in their suits!) also deliver the most entertaining announcements – with a pinch of Australian humour. The concerts of MaxMantis move, touch, fascinate, surprise, and transport audiences into a world full of energy, adrenaline, and musical adventures – to infinity and beyond!

Richard Iles’ Miniature Brass Emporium: New Futures II

The Stoller Hall

Richard Iles flugelhorn / Jonny Ford soprano & tenor saxophone / Tim France alto & tenor saxophone / Maisie Riley tenor saxophone / Emily Burkhardt baritone saxophone / Adam Chatterton, Paul Mitchell, Robbie Robson trumpets, flugelhorns / Harry Maund, Rory Ingham trombones / Simon Minshall bass trombone / Mike Walker guitar / Les Chisnall piano / Pete Turner bass / Eryl Roberts drums

In 2000, mjf commissioned and premiered its first ever new work: New Futures, written by composer, trumpeter and mainstay of the local scene Richard Iles.  25 years later, to help celebrate mjf’s 30th edition, we’ve re-commissioned Richard to revisit and re-develop his concept for the piece, now featuring some ex-students who’ve since benefitted from his expert tuition alongside players from the original line-up.

Performed by The Miniature Brass Emporium, his fifteen-piece ensemble that combines elements of funk, soul, and contemporary jazz, the sound is versatile and dynamic, showcasing a range of moods, from roaring ensembles to sensitive and impressionist pieces.  Initially the band was all brass, but is now expanded to include saxophones, broadening the sound palette and increasing the possibilities for Richard’s compositional style.

“…expect ensemble writing and playing of the highest order, with colourful orchestrations and textures combining with improvisation from both the younger and the more established generation of the North-West’s performers.” That’s how the mjf 2000 brochure anticipated the premiere at what was then The Green Room (now Gorilla), and we can expect those same qualities to be in evidence 25 years later!

Over the years, Richard has written music to feature virtuoso saxophone players Iain Ballamy, Andy Schofield and Iain Dixon – all of which have been premiered at previous Manchester Jazz Festivals.

As a member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra, Richard performed with notable musicians Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs, Anthony Braxton, Vince Mendoza, Peter Erskine, and Bill Frisell. As a member of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith, he accompanied jazz legends Joe Lovano, Kurt Elling, John Scofield, and Gary Burton. All this has had a huge effect on his compositional style and approach to building a jazz ensemble.

The current iteration of The Miniature Brass Emporium is an invigorating balance of both young and older players. His student alumni are fast-rising players already forging their own careers, and Richard’s long-time colleagues Mike Walker, Les Chisnall, Eryl Roberts, Tim France and Pete Turner are all stalwarts of the Manchester and national jazz scenes.

mjf gratefully acknowledges the support of PRS Foundation and Granada Foundation towards the creation of this project – also, fittingly, the two funders of the original commission in 2000.
