mjf @ First Street (Main Stage)

Miles Pillinger drums / Olivia Cuttill trumpet / James Absalom tenor saxophone / Liam Mason keyboards / Chris Williams double bass / JJ Petrie percussion

Opening the mjf celebrations at First Street, Mangorata’s sound is characterised by wild and inventive improvisation in a jungle of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, swing and funk grooves. Using an array of textures, the players are unafraid to convey their musical stories via fully-fledged bustling rhythm, or via stripped-back intimacy.

The band draws inspiration from the works of legends such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, and Hermeto Pascoal.

Having made their mark on the Leeds circuit, the band is attracting attention further afield: their eponymous EP was described as “first class” by Jazz FM’s John Osbourne, and it signals the burgeoning new wave of exciting young UK players who are spreading the word of jazz to new and younger audiences.
