For this extra special Jam Night, Matt & Phred’s are teaming up with Manchester Jazz Festival to give all singers and musicians the opportunity to get on stage and perform at one of Manchester’s most well-loved jazz clubs. The stage is open to all musicians to play with fellow jammers and a house band, led by band leader Dave Luvin, that features some of Manchester’s most prestigious jazz musicians.

With the genres for the night covering jazz, neo-soul, and R’n’B, whether musicians want to play a standard, a unique twist on a popular tune, or simply see where the beat takes them, all are welcome. Bring along your vocals, guitars, brass, strings, and whatever other instruments you play.

Over the years, Matt & Phred’s Jam Nights have attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band, to name but a few. You can certainly expect to see some familiar faces from the rest of the Manchester Jazz Festival line up, as well as those who have built a stellar reputation among the Northern music scene.

More of a listener than a player? No problem, there will be plenty of room for you to kick back and watch the evening unfold. It’s fair to say anything could happen.

Ivor Novello-nominated saxophonist and composer Alex Hitchcock is regarded as one of the UK’s most creative and virtuosic jazz musicians. Critically acclaimed releases as leader on Fresh Sound New Talent and Edition Records, as well as innovative collaborations with a wide range of luminary peers, have confirmed his growing international reputation as an instigator and catalyst for captivating musical encounters that ‘continually push the envelope a little further’ (Jazzmania BE).

In Dream Band, his most recent album as leader, Hitchcock pulls together a pool of 15 musicians from both sides of the Atlantic to bring to life ‘an album of depth and complexity’ (Jazzflits NL). New York heavy-hitters Chris Cheek, Jason Brown and David Adewumi line up alongside a who’s who of the burgeoning London jazz scene.

Following a critically acclaimed 2021 release on legendary Barcelona label Fresh Sound New Talent and a sold-out album launch at Ronnie Scott’s, the touring lineup for Alex Hitchcock’s ‘Dream Band’ features BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Deschanel Gordon, and MOBO-nominated drummer Shane Forbes.
