Alligator Gumbo

Matt & Phreds

Alligator Gumbo are a seven-piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, featuring the authentic line up of clarinet, violin, trumpet, trombone, accordion, steel guitar, double bass, and washboard. Having played extensively around the country, and at the often packed-out Matt & Phred’s, it’s fair to say this band can make your Saturday count.

The band plays New Orleans swing / jazz from the 1920s era with songs made popular by the likes of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton and Ella Fitzgerald, performed in the traditional style of upbeat tempos, entertaining improvisations, foot-stomping swinging rhythms, and rowdy group singing.

As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.
