Lara Jones is an award-winning saxophonist, composer and producer now based in London. She is also a member of avant-garde trio J Frisco.  Lara creates high energy pulsating electronics using saxophone, synths, beats, live processing, voice and field recordings used to build structures and queer narratives through her work.

She was a Jerwood Arts Jazz Encounter Fellow 2020-2022 and recipient of Help Musicians UK’s Peter Whittingham Jazz Award 2021. She recently featured a ground-breaking guest mix on Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC 6 Music show and has had her work featured across BBC 6Music and BBC Radio 3. Lara is on the cutting edge of experimental music, both in and out of jazz and is set to release a new EP in 2023. She also loves to create works for the piano and is interested in exploring other art forms in conjunction with her music.

Lara joined mjf’s hothouse artist development programme in 2019 and her consequent commissioned work Ensō was commissioned and premiered at mjf 2022 as an installation in Piccadilly Station.

As part of her participation in the Constellations programme, she’ll be visiting Israel for a residency with the Synthesizer artist development programme:

“Having never had the opportunity to go to the Middle East it’ll be amazing to explore Israel and be inspired by the diverse culture, artists and music in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, including gigs at Yellow Submarine and cross-genre artists like WACKELKONTAKT, Agat Schwarz and BĘÃTFÓØT. These artists use electronic sounds, production and visuals in really exciting ways; production is something I’m learning more about and I’m keen to explore how our styles could blend and take influence from each other.

It’s challenging to know where to start when booking gigs outside the UK – Constellations will be a great way to expand my horizons, connect with promoters and festivals and start to get my music heard and performed overseas.”
