Applications are now closed for this round of Soundcheck.
mjf soundcheck is a new free development scheme for musicians aged 18 – 25 based in Greater Manchester. Soundcheck is for artists who are interested in bringing improvisation into their music-making, to extend their networks and to help define what jazz means to them.
HOW IT WORKS
mjf soundcheck is an online programme encouraging musicians to dip into making new work using improvisation or jazz.
Artists apply with an idea for a new piece of music. Then through peer online sessions they are introduced to each other, to relevant industry individuals and to new music that might inspire them. They are set personalised challenges along the way as they create a new piece of improvised music, which they share with the group at the end of the programme.
They are assigned an artistic mentor from our mjf hothouse scheme, and we personally introduce participants to some northern music industry legends and influencers along the way.
This programme is free and the first round is being run entirely online due to Covid-19 restrictions.
WHO CAN APPLY
You do not need to have studied music formally in an educational setting; you don’t need experience in jazz or improvisation – in fact we’d love it if this was all new for you. We do want to see an interest in learning and finding out more about jazz, plus enthusiasm and commitment.
We particularly welcome submissions from artists of colour, those with a disability, and people facing barriers for example: childcare issues, mental health conditions and low income.

We will be running further rounds of Soundcheck in the future. If you have any questions please email Helen Goodman.
Soundcheck is supported by funding from Arts Council England and Greater Manchester Combined Authority. mjf is a PRS Foundation Talent Development Partner in association with Youth Music.
